Pressure is one of those things that comes with working in a fast-paced environment, especially in the tech space where priorities can change in real time and new tasks can arrive when you are already deep into another one.

From my own perspective, I have noticed that pressure can slow down my progress on deliverables.

Imagine you are in the middle of working on a specific task, trying to understand the details, execute properly, and deliver quality work. Suddenly, another task is allocated to you with immediate effect.

Now, mentally, you are caught between two places.

“Am I here or there?”

You are working on one deliverable, but your attention has already moved to another. If you don’t manage that pressure properly, productivity begins to suffer.

Over time, I have developed two simple approaches that help me navigate situations like this:

  1. CLARITY

For me, clarity is about taking away the tension and pressure long enough to understand exactly what is required of me.

When a task is given to me, even if it is impromptu, I don’t believe the best response is always to start immediately.

Sometimes, the smartest thing you can do is ask questions.

What exactly is the expected outcome?
What is the scope of the task?
What is the priority?
What does the person requesting it actually need?

I ask questions, process the information, and digest the task until I have a clear understanding of what I am expected to deliver.

Because when there is no clarity, you can be busy without actually being productive.

Clarity reduces tension. Clarity gives direction. Clarity makes execution easier.

  1. SETLIST

The second thing I use is what I call my setlist.

I gather all my proposed deliverables together and arrange them according to priority and the time required to complete each one.

I assign a timeframe to specific tasks and work according to that structure.

Interestingly, I don’t really like using the word “deadline.”

I prefer “lifeline.”

Because, for real, nothing dies in my hands not a project, not an idea, not a deliverable. 🔥

A lifeline reminds me that every task has a time within which it needs attention, and my responsibility is to organize myself well enough to bring each one to completion.

ORDER YOUR DELIVERABLES OR THEY WILL ORDER YOUR EMOTIONS

From experience, the moment you fail to put your deliverables in order, you become vulnerable to distraction.

And when distraction takes over, emotion begins to take over attention.

Suddenly, a task that was supposed to be simple starts feeling burdensome.

What’s interesting is that the burden doesn’t necessarily disappear even when additional time is given. Sometimes, you can be given more time and still feel overwhelmed because the real problem was never time, it was lack of structure.

That is why I believe productivity isn’t just about how fast you can work.

It is also about how well you can organize your attention.

In a fast-moving tech environment, pressure will always exist. New tasks will come. Priorities will shift. Impromptu requests will happen.

But pressure doesn’t have to dictate your productivity.

For me, the approach is simple:

Get clarity. Build your setlist. Organize your attention. Give every deliverable its lifeline. Then execute.

Because at the end of the day, delivering under pressure isn’t about doing everything at once.

It is about knowing what deserves your attention now, what comes next, and having the discipline to finish what you started.
